A diesel particulate filter (DPF), also called a FAP (filtre à particules), sits in the exhaust of diesel vehicles and captures soot and ash so it isn’t released into the air.
Common problems with a blocked DPF
- Loss of power and sluggish acceleration
- Poor fuel economy from extra back-pressure
- Delayed throttle response
- In severe cases, the engine won’t start
Why DPFs block
- Short journeys that never let it reach regeneration temperature
- Faulty temperature or pressure sensors
- EGR valve faults sending more exhaust gas through the filter
- Swirl flap problems
How we fix it
- Diagnostics first, to find the real cause
- A forced regeneration to burn off the soot
- Repairing the sensor, EGR or swirl flap fault behind it
Fixing the cause, not just the symptom, is what keeps a DPF working. Book a diagnostic check and we’ll tell you what we find.
